Androscoggin County, Maine

Androscoggin County, Maine is nicknamed "The Twin Cities" because the county contains two of Maine’s largest cities, Lewiston and Auburn. Located on the banks of the Androscoggin RiverLewiston and neighboring Auburn form the business and cultural center of Androscoggin County. Androscoggin County is centrally located in southern Maine and is approximately one-half hour from both Portland, Maine’s largest city, and Augusta, Maine’s capital. Androscoggin County is bordered by Franklin County to the north, Kennebec County to the northeast, Sagadahoc County to the southeast, Cumberland County to the south and Oxford County to the west.

In 2008, Androscoggin County had an estimated 106,877 residents (U.S. Census Bureau). This was a 3% percent increase from the year 2000. Androscoggin County's 420.27 acres were far more densely populated with 220.8 persons per square mile than the remainder of Maine which had an average of 41.3 persons per square mile. The median household income was $45,254, nearly equal to the State of Maine average household income of $45,832.

Poland Spring Bottling, one of the major employers in Androscoggin County, utilizes the famous waters of Poland, Maine in Androscoggin County. Industry had always been attracted to Poland's water power sites but when mineral springs in the area were thought to have curative powers, the crowds came to Poland to sample the curative waters, which flow at 8 gallons a minute.

Androscoggin County was established in 1854 from towns originally in Cumberland County, Lincoln County, Kennebec County and Oxford County. At the time the county was established, both Lewiston and Auburn wanted to be the county seat. These two towns, directly across the Androscoggin River from each other, were the subject of a countywide vote to see which town would serve as the county seat. Auburn won the vote and has been the seat of Androscoggin County ever since.

Androscoggin County is home to the beautiful Great Falls Balloon Festival, a hot-air balloon event started in 1992 to promote the Lewiston-Auburn area as a tourist destination. The festival, located on the banks of the Androscoggin River, attracts crowds of approximately 100,000 visitors annually.

Higher education in Androscoggin County in clustered in the twin cities with Bates College Andover College and a Lewiston-Auburn division of the University of Maine located in Lewiston. The Central Maine Community College is located in Auburn. The Southern New Hampshire University in nearby Brunswick, ME also serves the residents of Androscoggin County.

The Central Maine Medical Center and St. Mary's Regional Medical Center in Lewiston serve the health care needs of Androscoggin County residents. The Central Maine Medical Center features a LifeFlight of Maine helipad.

Major roadways in Androscoggin County include Interstate-95 which provides easy access to Portland and Bangor. US Route 202 connects Androscoggin County to Augusta, Maine.
