Lewiston, Maine

Lewiston, Maine is in Androscoggin County with Lewiston's twin city, Auburn, directly across the beautiful Androscoggin River. Lewiston is bordered by the city of Auburn and the towns of GreeneSabattus and Lisbon. It is located between Portland, the state's largest city and the state capital of Augusta.

Lewiston was first settled in 1770. As more people moved into the area, residents sought incorporation as a town and received their charter on February 18, 1795. Water power from the Androscoggin River was harnessed and by 1809, a canal and dam were in place. Saw and grist mills soon followed as did homes for the mill workers. Today, the mills are gone, replaced by attractive new waterfront development and recreational areas.

Lewiston's waterfront area is well known for the Great Falls Balloon Festival, a hot-air balloon event used to promote the Lewiston-Auburn area as a tourist destination. The festival, located on the banks of the Androscoggin River, attracts American and Canadian crowds of approximately 100,000 visitors annually. Lewiston is Maine's second largest city. In 2007, Lewiston was home to 36,651 people according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

A major area employer, Walmart, operates a large warehousing facility in Lewiston. This facility currently services all New England Walmart stores. The Maine Democratic Party selected Lewiston’s Androscoggin Bank Colisee as the site of the 2009 Maine Democratic Convention, slated for early 2010.The Colisee, formerly the Central Maine Civic Center, has undergone substantial renovations. It is also the home of the Lewiston MAINEiacs hockey team.

The area's colleges and universities are centered in the twin cities of Lewiston and Auburn, with Bates College Andover College and a Lewiston-Auburn division of the University of Maine located in Lewiston. The Central Maine Community College is located in Auburn. The Southern New Hampshire University in nearby Brunswick, ME also serves the residents of Androscoggin County and Lewiston.

The Central Maine Medical Center and St. Mary's Regional Medical Center in Lewiston serve the health care needs of the city residents. The Central Maine Medical Center features a LifeFlight of Maine helipad.

Major roadways near Lewiston include Interstate 95 which provides easy access to Portland and Bangor. U.S. Route 202 connects Lewiston to Augusta, the state capital. Two bridges currently connect Lewiston: the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Bridge and the Governor James B. Longley Memorial Bridge. The Purple Bus provides public bus transportation. The nearby Auburn-Lewiston Municipal Airport is in Auburn, Maine. The cites of Auburn and Lewiston jointly own and operate the airport.
